Co-ownership Program
On rare occasions we place our young adults in a co-ownership agreement. In this arrangement you must live within an hour and a half of Grand Rapids, MI and be willing to do some back and forth traveling to us.
How this works is you get a dog (with varying levels of training depending on the dog) from us at a significantly reduced cost. The dog will live with you and be your dog. When the dog turns two we will pay for all of the genetic and health clearances. IF the dogs doesn’t get it’s clearances you have the dog spayed/neutered and our arrangement is done and the dog is yours. Assuming the dog gets all clearances then we will have the dog come to us for a breeding for a couple of days and go home to you until the dog is due to have her puppies. She will then stay here to deliver and raise her puppies. When the puppies go home your dog goes back to you. We would do this for a few litters.
If at any point she’s not a good mother, doesn’t bounce back well from having puppies etc she will be spayed and goes on to be a happy pet with you.
The catch with this is that we are involved with her semi regularly growing up. We need updates and we expect her to be kept at ideal weight and exercise and well socialized. You are responsible for keeping the dog on supplements, premium dog food and regularly veterinary care. More often than not we rule girls out of our breeding program. We are extremely picky on who actually makes it to the point that she becomes part of the breeding program. That being said you need to be prepared for your dog to make the cut as well.
We typically place girls in our co-ownership program. On occasion we have boys that we put in the program. In this case they remain intact indefinitely or until we are no longer needing them or they are no longer fertile. The commitment to their care is the same but they are only borrowed for a day or two maximum per breeding.
We spell out everything from the get go so it’s very clear who is responsible for what. If you are interested in this route the first step is to take our questionnaire.
We are doing this less and less and are more than likely going to offer a girl that maybe has one litter left before retirement.
